MICHAEL G. HOFKIN
Portfolio Manager, President
Michael has been president of Hofkin Capital Management, Inc. since 2000 (before 2011, the firm was known as Money Managers, Inc.) and has been managing investment portfolios for more than forty years. Michael began his career in the investment industry in 1970 as an equity research analyst at Wertheim & Co. on Wall Street. In 1974, he moved to Minnesota, joining Dain, Kalman & Quail and subsequently Robert W. Baird. Michael was voted a member of Institutional Investor magazine's All-America Research Team in 1974, 1975, and 1976.
Michael began managing discretionary portfolios in 1977, first at Smith Barney and later at Paine Webber. In 1992, Michael joined Regan Money Managers as part owner, taking majority ownership of the firm in 2000 and changing its name initially to Money Managers, Inc., then in 2011 to Hofkin Capital Management, Inc.
Michael holds a BA in Philosophy from Columbia University and an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He wrote his master’s thesis on techniques of traditional hedge fund management. After earning his MBA, Michael completed the PhD coursework in Finance from the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences.
Between college and business school, Michael served in the Peace Corps in Thailand.
BENJAMIN J. HOFKIN
Ben started with Hofkin Capital as a research analyst in 2013 and has been a principal since 2016, overseeing the firm’s technology and media holdings and helping to formulate the firm’s overall investment strategy. Prior to joining Hofkin Capital, Ben worked in the Financial Institutions Group at the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York.
Ben graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University, where he double-majored in history and political science with areas of concentration, respectively, in military history and international relations. He also holds an MA in Jewish Studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he was awarded the Ismar Elbogen Memorial Prize for Talmud scholarship.
Ben has lived in Israel and worked for many years in Jewish education and youth leadership. He is on the board of Camp Ramah in Wisconsin.
Janet has managed the day-to-day business operations of the firm since joining Hofkin Capital in 2010. Additionally, Janet oversees the firm’s client relations and assists with meeting compliance and regulatory requirements and other administrative matters. Prior to 2010, Janet worked as a legal assistant and administrator at a number of Twin Cities–area companies and law firms including Halpern & Druck and Popham Haik Schnobrich & Kaufman.
A lifelong lover of dogs and the outdoors, Janet goes every summer with her husband and their spaniels to Tofte on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
